International Women’s Day: Women Veterans
PTSD Resolution is a UK-based mental health charity that provides free therapy to veterans of the UK armed forces who suffer from post-traumatic stress. It works with a significant number of women who have experienced combat and other traumatic events during their service, or from living as a partner or family member of a traumatised veteran.
When soldiers, sailors and air personnel return from combat they carry more than just memories. Many of them carry the invisible wounds of trauma and stress that can affect their mental health long after their service has ended. For female veterans of the UK armed forces, these wounds can be particularly difficult to heal, as they often struggle with unique challenges related to their gender.
That's where PTSD Resolution comes in. This UK-based charity provides free, confidential therapy to veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions. While the organisation serves veterans of all genders, it recognises that women often face different experiences and obstacles than their male counterparts.
One of the women who has benefited from PTSD Resolution's services is Rachel. After serving in Afghanistan, she struggled with depression, anxiety, and insomnia, all symptoms of PTSD. "I was feeling very isolated and didn't feel like there was anyone who could understand what I was going through," She says. "But when I found PTSD Resolution, it was like a light went on. Finally, I had someone to talk to who could relate to my experiences."
Through the Human Givens therapy she received, Rachel was able to work through her trauma and regain control of her life.
PTSD Resolution's work with women veterans and family members is critical to addressing the unique challenges that female service members face. Women make up around 10% of the UK armed forces, and they may face discrimination and harassment during and after their service. These experiences can leave lasting scars that require specialised care and support.
By focusing on the needs of female veterans, in addition to those of the many male veterans that are treated, PTSD Resolution is helping to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and military service. They are proving that it's possible to heal from even the deepest wounds, and that no veteran should have to suffer in silence.
