Funding ensures continued free therapy for UK armed forces veterans, reservists and families struggling with military trauma

PTSD Resolution, a leading UK charity providing free mental health treatment to armed forces veterans and their families, has secured new funding of £28,200 from the Veterans' Foundation to sustain its life-changing therapy services across the UK.

The grant will fund the day-to-day delivery of PTSD Resolution's unique rapid-access mental health services, ensuring the charity can continue offering free Human Givens therapy to veterans, reservists and family members who have been failed by other services or face barriers to accessing help.

Filling critical gaps in veterans' mental health provision

With waiting times for NHS mental health services often stretching months, PTSD Resolution's rapid response fills a vital gap, providing first appointments within an average of just 12 days. The charity's 200-strong network of qualified therapists across the UK delivered 3,125 therapy sessions in 2023-24, supporting 460 beneficiaries including veterans in prison and those with addiction issues whom other services often turn away.

"This generous funding from the Veterans' Foundation is crucial to our mission," said Charles Highett, CEO of PTSD Resolution. "It enables us to maintain our commitment that no veteran or family member seeking help will be turned away. Every day, we receive calls from people in crisis who have often waited a long time for an appointment or have been rejected elsewhere. This grant ensures we can continue to respond immediately when veterans and families reach out for help."

The charity consistently delivers highly effective outcomes with its non-invasive therapy approach, recording a 68% reliable improvement rate in PTSD symptoms and an 82% therapy completion rate. Treatment averages just 6.75 sessions per client, at a cost of £940 per case.

Jane Gurney, CEO of the Veterans' Foundation, said, "We are pleased to award this grant to PTSD Resolution in recognition of the very important role they play in veterans' mental health support. With rising demand for mental health support, their rapid-access model helps address critical gaps in provision, and this funding will ensure that more veterans and family members can access timely, effective therapy when they need it most."

Supporting the whole armed forces family

Beyond individual veterans, PTSD Resolution has expanded its reach through innovative programmes including FAITH (Family Assistance & Intervention for Trauma Healing), supporting partners and children affected by living with traumatised veterans. The charity's pioneering work in prisons has helped 202 veterans across 35 establishments, addressing the complex link between untreated military trauma and offending.

The Veterans' Foundation is one of the country's leading military charities, established in 2016 to raise funds for organisations supporting the armed forces community. Since its formation, the Foundation has awarded over £30 million through more than 1,200 grants to over 500 charities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Foundation's work is primarily funded through the Veterans' Lottery, which provides sustainable funding for vital veterans' services with tickets costing £10 per month and a jackpot of £75,000.

Evidence-based approach delivering real results

PTSD Resolution's effectiveness is validated by independent research published in Oxford University Press and studies by Nottingham Trent University and King's College London. The charity is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services and maintains Cobseo membership as part of the Confederation of Service Charities.

The funding comes as demand for veterans' mental health services continues to rise, with PTSD Resolution having received over 4,500 referrals since its foundation in 2009. The charity operates with exceptional efficiency, directing 92% of expenditure directly to charitable objectives through its lean structure with no salaried staff or assets.

"Military trauma doesn't just affect the veteran—it impacts entire families and communities," added Highett. "This Veterans' Foundation grant enables us to continue our comprehensive approach, treating not just the veteran but supporting families and providing training to employers and organisations. It's about creating a network of understanding and support around every person we help."

The charity's Human Givens therapy approach, delivered by qualified therapists registered with the Human Givens Institute, focuses on resolving trauma without requiring clients to relive traumatic events. Services are available locally, online and by phone across the UK, with treatment starting within days of first contact.
