How our therapy works

If you are a former member of the UK armed services, a reservist or a family member, and you suffer from post-traumatic stress, trauma or other mental health symptoms, such as depression, flashbacks and nightmares, then please call us, below.

Step 1: Contact PTSD Resolution by phone on 0300 302 0551.

If the line is busy or outside the hours Mon-Fri, 0900-1700hrs, please leave a brief message with your number, and it will be replied to as soon as possible that day or early the next. - we'll discuss your needs, advise you of your eligibility for help; describe how the programme works; and then assign a local therapist who is registered with PTSD Resolution.

Step 2: Your therapist will then contact you to arrange your first session, usually within a few days. The programme involves usually five or six one-hour therapy sessions. This is on a one-to-one, out-client basis with the therapist, until symptoms are relieved. It can also be by phone, or over the internet. All therapy is free and entirely confidential.

Understanding Our Therapeutic Approach

PTSD Resolution specialises in Human Givens therapy, a practical and effective approach to treating military trauma. This method has helped thousands of veterans, reservists, and family members recover from the psychological impact of military service.

The Human Givens Approach

Human Givens therapy is a solution-focused approach that:

  • Addresses both the cause of problems and your current circumstances
  • Combines proven techniques from various therapeutic methods
  • Focuses on practical steps towards recovery
  • Doesn't require you to repeatedly relive traumatic experiences
  • Aims to resolve issues in as few sessions as possible

What to Expect in Therapy

First Session

  • Getting to know your therapist and building rapport
  • Discussing your current challenges and symptoms
  • Identifying what you hope to achieve through therapy
  • Learning relaxation techniques to help manage immediate symptoms
  • Setting initial goals for your recovery

Subsequent Sessions

  • Processing traumatic memories safely using the Rewind Technique
  • Learning practical tools to manage symptoms in everyday life
  • Building resilience for long-term wellbeing
  • Addressing specific challenges such as sleep problems or anger
  • Working towards your personal goals for recovery

The Rewind Technique

A key component of our therapy, the Rewind Technique allows you to process traumatic memories without having to relive them in detail. This gentle but powerful method:

  • Helps your brain properly process and file away traumatic memories
  • Reduces emotional intensity associated with memories
  • Doesn't require you to describe traumatic events in detail
  • Can bring relief even after a single session

Evidence for Our Approach

Our therapy outcomes have been independently validated by Kings College London, which found that:

  • Our treatment results match or exceed outcomes from NHS IAPT services
  • We achieve comparable recovery rates despite working with more severely distressed clients
  • Our approach shows especially good results for treating trauma-related symptoms

Our own data shows:

  • 68% of clients achieve reliable improvement
  • Treatment typically requires just 5-7 sessions
  • Results are maintained at follow-up

Common Questions

Do I have to talk about my traumatic experiences in detail? No. Our approach can work without you needing to describe traumatic events in detail.

How long until I notice improvement? Many clients report feeling better after their very first session, with continued improvement throughout the therapy programme.

Is medication required alongside therapy? No. While some clients may be taking medication prescribed by their doctor, our therapy works effectively with or without medication.

What if I need more than the average number of sessions? We provide the therapy you need. While most clients need 5-7 sessions, we'll continue working with you if more sessions are required.

What happens after therapy ends? By the end of therapy, you'll have practical tools and techniques to maintain your progress. If you ever need additional support in the future, you can always contact us again.
