By CD, RAF Mountain Rescue Service.
"My PTSD was triggered by a number of traumatic events, occurring first in my bedroom at the age of 9, and then while serving in the RAF and the RAF Mountain Rescue Service, in Snowdonia, the Lake District and Uttoxeter between 1993 and 1997.
"I first noticed the signs of PTSD as a teenager in the 1980s but it was after my military service that my aggressions levels rose. My wife really wanted me to see someone about it so, in 2003, after leaving the military, I went to see my GP. I was then referred to a Psychiatric Nurse for evaluation and then for counselling. Over the next few years, I had several sets of counselling sessions (which proved ineffective) and a week at a Combat Stress facility.
"The weeks' evaluation did not go well for me: I left the facility upset, distressed and feeling worse than when I entered. In fact, this visit was one of the most upsetting times in my adult life and I wished that I could blot it from my memory. Later, I sought help again from my GP who arranged some CBT sessions but these events at the same time that some upsetting events unfolded. So, after my war-gaming club recommended PTSD Resolution, I contacted them for help.
"The treatment I received from PTSD Resolution was so much better. I found the atmosphere was warm, calming and very refreshing. Being able to tackle the trauma without talking about it was a revelation. When I opened my eyes, I felt such a lifting of my spirit. I was overwhelmed and astounded; this was a watershed moment. After a few sessions, I am seeing positive changes and the impact of my flashbacks has lessened.
"I would gladly recommend PTSD Resolution because their approach is so different and I cannot emphasise how much it has helped me. I struggle to think how PTSD Resolution's service could be improved. I am conscious of your limited funding and network of therapists, and you already provide an excellent option for veterans. I would, however, suggest that the 'pub hub' be complemented with a 'club hub' to increase the visibility of your network."
