Veteran Sam Doyle has recently made headlines with his incredible walk around the British coastline — all in aid of PTSD Resolution. Sam took time out from his journey to share more about his military experience and what inspired this life-changing fundraiser.

From the Forces to the Edge

“I joined the Royal Horse Artillery as soon as I left school. In 2008, I served in Afghanistan as part of a four-man fire support team. But when I returned to barracks in Germany, I realised something wasn’t quite right. I felt a massive change in myself — my mental state was deteriorating day by day.”

Struggling to cope, Sam left the British Army and joined the French Foreign Legion, hoping for a fresh start. But things worsened. “With the Legion, my mental state deteriorated further. The signs of PTSD began to emerge. Thankfully, in 2010, I was medically discharged.”

Falling Through the Cracks

“Over the next six years, my PTSD symptoms got worse and worse. My GP diagnosed me and referred me for NHS support. I tried therapy, antidepressants, psychiatric treatment — but nothing helped. In fact, it all made my PTSD worse. I turned to alcohol and stronger drugs to cope.”

At his lowest point, Sam lost his home and even attempted suicide. “I was in a downward spiral. I felt let down by the MoD and didn’t think I had the right to ask for help from a veterans’ charity.”

A Turning Point

“In May 2017, I reached a crossroads. I could either attempt suicide again — or I could pack up my rucksack and become homeless once more. I chose to walk.” Sam told his best friend he wanted to walk the entire British coastline. His friend suggested doing it for a cause. That’s when Sam contacted PTSD Resolution.

“On 27 May 2017, I set off from Blackpool Pleasure Beach. I’ve never looked back.” Nine months into the journey, Sam had already walked 2,000 miles, worn out seven pairs of boots, and raised nearly £7,000 for PTSD Resolution.

“The highlight for me hasn’t just been the therapeutic benefits of the walk — but meeting my best friend Jess, a lurcher-greyhound cross who’s become my companion.”

Raising Awareness, Saving Lives

The funds Sam raised have already covered therapy for 12 veterans — and he’s not stopping. “That’s my incentive to walk the remaining 6,000 miles of coastline. Everywhere I go, I talk to people about PTSD, veterans, and this incredible charity.”

PTSD Resolution is deeply grateful to Sam for his determination, openness, and advocacy. His journey not only raises vital funds, but also helps break down stigma and encourages others to seek help.
